Post-Production Assistant Producer

About Public Democracy

The Public Democracy Project exists to deliver impactful outcomes and sustainable solutions that push us closer to more equitable and just systems and policies. We are an all remote team that works primarily, but not exclusively, in areas of civic engagement, health equity, economic justice, environmental stewardship, faith-based organizing, and diversity in AI. Public Democracy (PD) is made up of two distinct organizations, a public benefit corporation and a 501c3 non-profit, that work in concert to achieve mutual goals. Three defining characteristics of PD’s work are:

  1. We ground every project in the belief that every person has value

  2. Our initiatives are designed to reach and empower communities traditionally excluded or discounted

  3.  We employ strategies that build data around undervalued communities, intentionally affect algorithmic understanding and referral, and measure success by real-world outcomes

Role at a glance

Title: Post-Production Assistant Producer

Team: Communications

Reports to: Media Content and Production Manager

Works closely with: Video editors, communications team, external partners

Location: Remote, anywhere in the US

Type: Full time, salaried

About the Role

Public Democracy is hiring a Post-Production Assistant Producer to help review, develop and deliver PD's videos and podcasts. You’ll report to the Media Content and Production Manager, who oversees content from production through publication, and you’ll work alongside our video editors to take projects from first cut to final delivery.

This work is varied. On any given week you might cut podcast and video clips, review an edit for accuracy and brand fit, and work with a partner to scope the social video they need. Projects can span different themes, audiences and brand identities, so you’ll switch gears often.

Partners will rely on you directly. You’ll learn what they want, translate it into clear direction for the editing team, and make sure what we deliver matches. This role suits someone who is meticulous, works well on a team, and can be trusted to own a review on their own.

Our work focuses on social issues that affect people’s lives. We’re looking for someone who cares about the world around them, wants their work to have real impact, and will bring that commitment to every story we tell.

What you'll do

Post-production and review

  • Review video and podcast cuts on your own, checking accuracy, pacing, audio quality, captions, graphics and brand consistency

  • Give editors clear, specific, timecoded feedback, and track revisions in Notion through to final approval

  • Help develop and shape videos and podcasts with the Coordinator, from early concepts and story structure through final delivery

  • Deliver final files in the right formats, specs and aspect ratios for each platform

Clips and social video

  • Find strong moments in podcasts and interviews and produce short clips for social media

  • Write or check on-screen text, captions and titles so every clip is accurate and on-brand

  • Adapt content for different platforms, audiences and brand guidelines

  • Identify strategic content to push into amplification network

Partner coordination

  • Act as a trusted point of contact for partners on their video and social video needs

  • Learn what partners want and need, turn that into clear briefs, and coordinate the work with the editing team

  • Manage partner feedback, timelines and approvals so projects land on schedule

Team and workflow

  • Work closely with the manager, editors and the wider communications team

  • Keep reviews, project trackers, assets and schedules organized in Notion, and share delivery details so the Coordinator can track timelines and content performance

  • Take on post-production projects as priorities shift, with different themes and brands

What you bring

  • A genuine commitment to social impact: you care about society and the issues our work addresses, and you want your work to make a difference

  • 1–3 years of experience in video or podcast post-production, production coordination, or a similar role

  • Very careful attention to detail: you catch the typo in the lower third, the audio pop, and the off-brand color

  • Confidence reviewing work on your own and giving clear, constructive feedback

  • Good judgment and professionalism with external partners, including asking the right questions to understand what they need

  • Strong organization, with the ability to manage several projects, deadlines and sets of brand guidelines at once

  • Flexibility and a willingness to jump into a wide range of projects, themes and formats

  • A collaborative approach: you like working on a team and are comfortable both giving and taking direction

  • Comfort working remotely, communicating proactively across time zones and tools

  • Working knowledge of social video formats and best practices across platforms

  • Clear written and verbal communication

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with the tools our video team uses: Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut

    Pro, CapCut and Riverside

  • Experience using Notion for reviews and project tracking

  • Experience working with multiple clients or brands, at an agency or production company

  • Experience producing content on social, civic or policy issues, or for nonprofits and advocacy

    organizations

Essential traits for all PD team members

  • A Desire to Serve - PD team members are driven to work toward a more just and compassionate society. Everything we do is ultimately about improving the lives of those we serve. A focus outside oneself also drives a desire to keep pushing for solutions, and is the best way to meet the high expectations on work product and outcomes in our remote working environment.

  • Empathy - Team members must be able to understand the needs, perspectives, and lived experiences of others, even (and especially) when they do not align with personal convictions. Our starting point is always to provide value for the audiences we are seeking to reach, which requires understanding their needs, hopes, and concerns.

  • A Positive "Figure It Out" Attitude - PD prides itself on being responsive to new contexts, technologies, and approaches to problem solving. We are constantly pushing the limits of our own systems, knowledge, and skills and integrating tools like AI to help us deliver better outcomes. We approach problems with a "why not?" attitude and are always challenging our assumptions about how things should or could be done. We are looking for people who are adaptive, willing to try, fail, and try again. PD team members won't always know how to get a job done, but they're always driven to figure it out.

  • Goal Oriented - We are looking for strong team players who thrive in helping colleagues reach shared goals and find satisfaction in pushing projects across the finish line. We are not a 9-5 company that clock hours, but instead focus on outcomes. We have a generous leave policy and remote working flexibility to ensure each member of our team is able to push toward outcomes worthy of the communities we serve.

Compensation and how to apply

  • Compensation: Compensation is competitive, plus benefits: health, dental and vision insurance, a wellness stipend, and family planning benefits

  • To apply: email your resume and cover letter to rjohnson@publicdemocracy.io. Your cover letter

should include relevant experience or interests in PD's current organizational needs listed above,

plus links to 2–3 examples of video or podcast work you produced or reviewed.

We strongly encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds. Fluency in a language other than English is a bonus, but not required. PD is an all remote team and applicants may be from anywhere in the United States.
